HOT MEALS

This is tough to list individual places so what we know and suggest is if your clan is wanting something different, why not drop by a local grocery story deli where little Bobby can get his cold Fried Chicken, Dad can get his hot wings, Billy can get his sub sandwich
and Mom can pick up her hot fried chicken dinner and cool salads!

Other options would include places like Subway, who offer a variety of hot and cold subs.

Then again after a long, hot day in the Mojave desert sun, who's going to want a hot meal!

COLD CHOICES

Best Ice Cream -- Reader's Pick
Las Vegas Review Journal Reader Pick
Cold Stone Creamery
Multiple locations
Las Vegas , NV

Ah, heck, what's not to love about Cold Stone? Here's a place that lets you pick whatever flavor of ice cream you'd like but they don't stop there; you get to customize that ice cream with mix-ins and add-ons that would make not only Ben but also Jerry jealous. And the continually added flavors, monthly specials and seasonal features help to keep things interesting. Baskin-Robbins finished more than 31 votes behind.

Las Vegas Review Journal Staff Pick
Luv-It Frozen Custard
505 East Oakey Boulevard
Las Vegas , NV

We've said it before, many times before, and we'll say it again: We love Luv-It -- so much so that introducing newbies to the place has become a staff tradition. The neighborhood around this cult favorite may be a little dicey at times -- especially after dark -- but the risk is well worth it for a Western sundae or a coconut cone, although we do wish they'd make malt creme just a little more often.

Best Sub Sandwich -- Reader's Pick
Las Vegas Review Journal Reader Pick
Subway
Multiple Locations
Las Vegas , NV

Subway has the subs, and readers can get them any way they wish. Thanks to the diet success of the famous Jared Fogle, Subway's low-fat subs have become particularly popular with those who are watching the waistline, although there are plenty of high-calorie subs as well, including the Chipotle Southwest Cheesesteak. And Subway not only offers a variety of breads to pack those subs onto, they also offer to toast them as well. Capriotti's sandwiches its way into second place.

Capriotti's
Mutliple Locations
Las Vegas , NV

Capriotti's, though, remains first in our hearts, for its amazingly overstuffed subs -- even a small is a meal in itself -- such as the Cobbie, which is sort of like Thanksgiving on a bun with its turkey and dressing and cranberry sauce, and the ever-popular Capastrami, with its pastrami and coleslaw. We can't handle the calories often, but when we do, we sure enjoy them.

Capriotti's

Las Vegas , NV

Whether you are going for a straight sub or a speciality such as The Bobbie (Thanksgiving dinner as a sandwich) or Capastrami, you will have your hands full -- literally. The sandwiches are big, stuffed full of tasty ingredients and more than enough to sate your appetite.

Best Deli -- Reader's Pick
Las Vegas Review Journal Reader Pick
Jason's Deli
Multiple locations
Las Vegas , NV

You won't encounter a guy with an attitude behind the counter at Jason's, snapping at you as he slices your corned beef oh, so carefully, and that's not the only non-New York thing about Jason's. Readers like it for its diversity: The menu includes New Orleans-style muffulettas and po' boys as well as paninis, wraps and stacked-up-to-here sandwiches such as The New York Yankee and the Club Royale, plus salads and soups and stuffed baked potatoes. Bagel Cafe is a distant second.
Las Vegas Review Journal Staff Pick
Bagel Cafe
301 N. Buffalo Drive
Las Vegas , NV

They generally don't yell at us at Bagel Cafe, even when we ask for that pastrami on white with mustard and mayo, but in every other way this is the real deal. The bagels are nice and tough and chewy, the meats are freshly sliced and the soup's homemade. And for a real taste of an authentic deli, we can cruise the bakery counter and choose from among rugelach in several flavors, black-and-whites and even a babka on occasion.

Jason's Deli

Las Vegas , NV

New York-style in Las Vegas has translated well in Jason's Deli. Ample servings of sandwiches, side dishes, dessert and more keep the customers coming back and the prices won't break the budget.

Best Desserts -- Reader's Pick
Las Vegas Review Journal Reader Pick
The Cheesecake Factory
Multiple locations
Las Vegas , NV

The Cheesecake Factory offers lots of other stuff, but by definition it's all about desserts, and we've never known the place to let readers down. Among the nearly endless varieties of rich -- and never cheesy -- cheesecakes are Godiva Chocolate Cheesecake, dulce de leche caramel cheesecake, fresh banana cream cheesecake, Key lime cheesecake ... well, you get the picture. The Claim Jumper finishes a sweet second.
Las Vegas Review Journal Staff Pick
Layers
2708 N. Green Valley Pkwy
Henderson , NV

Oooh, just thinking about Layers makes us hungry. We like those big gooey chocolate concoctions, the carrot cakes with their diversity of flavors and textures, and -- not that we're chocoholics -- the little cakes that the guy behind the counter tells us to warm in the microwave until the center is soft and gooey.

Best Tacos -- Reader's Pick
Las Vegas Review Journal Reader Pick
Taco Bell
Multiple Locations
Las Vegas , NV

Taco Bell's basic tacos have reached iconic status, but the chain keeps introducing new varieties to keep readers comin' back for more. There's the grande soft taco, the spicy chicken soft taco, the double decker taco, grilled steak soft taco, and on and on. Roberto's Taco Shop is a close second.
Las Vegas Review Journal Staff Pick
Islands Restaurant
10810 West Charleston Boulevard
Las Vegas , NV

We like tacos at Islands because we can eat them in a casual, comfortable atmosphere, but also because the tacos are so interesting -- such as the Island Fish, with its pollock, cabbage, cilantro and chipotle-white sauce, or the fusionistic Yaki, with its chicken and teriyaki sauce, plus pineapple and jack cheese. They may not be authentic, but they sure are good.

Best Pastry -- Reader's Pick
Las Vegas Review Journal Reader Pick
Freed's Bakery
4780 S. Eastern Ave.
Las Vegas , NV

Freed's has been in Las Vegas since the railroad auction. OK, maybe not quite, but it has been around long enough to achieve landmark status and no one's ever suggested imploding it. That's because of a selection of pastries, cakes and other items that is so high in quality, the home-baked fruitcake is even delicious. Marie Callender's pies are a distant second.
Las Vegas Review Journal Staff Pick
Ambience Bakery Bistro
3980 East Sunset Road
Las Vegas , NV

The epitome of a fine pastry is a buttery rich croissant, and Ambiance has the real deal -- so pure, so buttery, they're perfect completely unadorned with a nice fresh cup of coffee. Almond and chocolate and raisin croissants are other options, and there are cakes, as well, for when we're looking for something a little sweeter.
